Abstract

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the most well-known masterpieces of Alexandre Dumas, a French author in the 19th century. The Shawshank Redemption is written by Stephen King, who is a contemporary American famous novelist. The two books are very exciting, describing the remarkable stories of the two heroes. They successfully portray the heroes who create miracles with hope in the face of adversity.
This thesis is composed of three parts: The first part is a brief introduction to two writers’ social background and two heroes in the works. The second part and the third part compare the similarities and the differences between the two heroes, mainly analyzing their personalities and characteristics. The conclusion summarizes the similarities and differences of two heroes in The Count of Monte Cristo and The Shawshank Redemption. They are very comparable, the similar framework of their stories, the same experience in their early period. Although they have different attitudes toward live, they share the same belief and firmly believe in liberty and hope.
Andy Dufresne and Edmond Dantès are the souls of the whole works, and their stories give us enlightenment, that is, we should keep hope and freedom alive in our heart and never give up all the same. Hope is antithetic to despair. Hope can make us become brave and overcome all the difficulties, which is also the essential factor for our success.

摘  要

《基督山伯爵》是19世纪法国浪漫主义作家大仲马最著名的作品之一。《肖申克的救赎》是美国当代著名小说家斯蒂芬•金的作品。这两本作品都精彩绝伦，记叙了两位主人公非凡的故事，成功地塑造了在逆境中满怀希望并创造奇迹的人物形象。
本文分为三个部分,第一部分主要介绍两位作家的社会背景和书中的两位男主人公。第二部分和第三部分比较了两位男主人公的相同点和不同点，本文主要是对男主人公的性格及特征进行分析。结论部分总结了《肖申克的救赎》和《基督山伯爵》男主人公的异同之处，他们非常具有可比性，他们的故事有着类似的框架，有着类似的早期经历，虽然他们有着不一样的人生态度，但他们有相同的信仰，他们对于自由和希望有着坚定的信念。
安迪•杜佛尼和爱德蒙•唐泰斯是这两部作品的灵魂，他们的故事给予我们一定的启示，我们应该把自由和希望这种信念放到心底，这是任何时代背景下都不该舍弃的，希望与绝望是对立的。希望能让我们变得勇敢并且战胜一切困难，也是成功路上必不可少的条件。
