Abstract

The novel The Jungle portrays the poverty of the working class, the lack of social programs, the unpleasantness and harshness of living and working conditions of the American immigrants. Jurgis, the protagonist of the novel, is an immigrant from Lithuania. With his dream of a better life, he came to the United States and thus began an immigrant’s life experience in a new world. The author explores the connotations of the American Dream in different times, and intends to demonstrate how Jurgis’ American dream emerges, comes true, fades away and is renewed. Thus, the author presents a different American dream to us.
This paper is composed of four parts. The first part introduces the novelist Upton Sinclair and his novel The Jungle and its social and cultural background; the second part introduces the "American Dream", including its origin and different connotations in different times; the third part analyzes the American Dream in this novel; the last part is the summary of this paper.

摘  要

小说《屠场》描述了美国移民的贫困生活、社会服务缺失、恶劣的生存与工作环境。小说的主人公尤吉斯是来自立陶宛的美国移民。揣着美好生活的梦想，他来到了美国,从而开启了一个移民在新世界的生命旅程。本文作者通过探索美国梦的起源及其发展，来阐释小说中尤吉斯的美国梦的产生、实现、消退以及重生。以此，作者将给我们呈现一个不一样的美国梦。
本文共分为四个部分。第一部分简要介绍了厄普顿•辛克莱及其作品《屠场》, 以及小说的社会和文化背景；第二部分介绍美国梦及其起源和不同时期的内涵；第三部分分析小说中的美国梦；最后一部分对本文进行了总结。
