摘要

《坎特伯雷故事集》是乔叟在十四世纪末用中世纪英语所著的一部故事集。在这部著作中，乔叟塑造了很多经典的人物，而修道院长就是其中之一。本篇论文将从世俗主义情结出发，来分析女修道院长这一形象。世俗主义情结是世俗主义和情结这两个概念的有机结合，它代表了一种潜意识里对于世俗生活和情感的向往，并且还带有一些人文主义的倾向。它的表现形式很多样，比如对教会的批判，就物质生活的追求以及个人情感上的满足等。
    因此，论文首先给出世俗情结的定义和特征，然后在对世俗情结有了了解后。论文从《坎特伯雷故事集》的总序中对女修道院长的生动描述以及女修道院长所讲的故事两方面入手，分别分析她世俗情结的表现。在总序中，主要从女修道院长的外貌，礼数，名字和行为方面进行探究。而对于女修女的故事，则从她讲述的方式，故事中的反犹太主义以及人文主义入手,因为反犹太主义和人文主义在某些方面和世俗情结是有共同之处的。

Abstract

The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century. In this masterpiece, Chaucer creates many successful characters and the Prioress is one of them. This thesis tries to analyze this Prioress from the perspective of her complex of Secularism. The complex of Secularism which organically combines the concept of Secularism and the complex is a subconscious desire for worldly life and emotions, also implying humanism. It has many forms to expressions, such as being critical to the church, pursuit for material life and emotional satisfaction.
Therefore, at the beginning of the thesis, the definition and manifestations of the complex of Secularism will be given, and then based on the understanding of it, this thesis will demonstrate the Prioress’s complex of Secularism both from the dramatical depiction of the Prioress in the general prologue and the content of the Prioress’s tale. In the prologue, the Prioress’s complex of Secularism is reflected from her appearance, courtesy, name and other behaviors. As to the Prioress’s tale, her way of telling is an indication of her complex of Secularism. Besides, the anti-Semitism and humanism in the tale has some common characteristics with the complex of Secularism in a way.
