摘要：

《丽该雅》的作者爱伦坡以恐怖故事和哥特小说闻名于世。他是美国短篇故事的最早先驱者之一，又被尊为推理小说的开山鼻祖。爱伦坡哥特小说《丽该雅》主要写丽该雅的丈夫以第一人称的叙述手法描写丽该雅死而复生的恐怖过程，以及丽该雅如何借助柔文娜的尸体还魂的。
      该文通过介绍哥特一词的来源、哥特文学的发展和特征以及作者爱伦坡短篇小说的特点让人们进一步了解爱伦坡哥特小说的独特意义和价值所在。本文以爱伦坡的典型哥特小说《丽该雅》为例，通过分析哥特意象比如幽闭的空间、恐怖的氛围等来了解哥特小说的特点，以及哥特意象是如何帮助作者揭示写作意图的，体会和欣赏哥特小说的意义所在。哥特小说《丽该雅》不仅仅展现给读者哥特小说中哥特意象的恐怖美感，还深刻地揭示了哥特意象所蕴含的人性的美与丑以及善良与邪恶。

Abstract:

Edgar Allen Poe is famous for his horrible story and gothic novel. He is one of the earliest pioneers of short story in American, and is regarded as the earliest founder of detective fiction. Poe’s gothic novel Ligeia is a story that describes the horrible process of Ligeia’s resurrection, and how Ligeia uses Rowena’s body to resurrect by the narrator in first-person narration.
    By introducing the origin of the word “gothic”, the development and features of gothic literature and the features of Allen Poe’s gothic novels, the thesis is going to make readers have a further understanding about the particular feature and value of Poe’ gothic novels. This thesis takes Ligeia, Poe’s typical gothic novel, as an example to understand the characteristics of gothic novel and how gothic image helps author to reveal the intention of writing, tasting and appreciating the significance of gothic novels through analyzing gothic image like claustrophobic space, the atmosphere of terror and so on. Gothic novel Ligeia does not only show us the horrible beauty of gothic image in gothic novel Ligeia, but also deeply reveals the beauty and ugliness, kindness and evil of human nature that gothic image contains.
