Abstract:
Toni Morrison is an outstanding African American woman writer who was awarded the Noble Prize as the first black woman writer. In her works, she is closely concerned about the plight and fate of the black women. She published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1969. Against the background of writer’s hometown, Loren town in Ohio, this novel tells a tragedy of a girl named Pecola. She is eager to get a pair of blue eyes like the white people. After having prayed to god day and night, she finally realized her dream. But she found herself still cannot get rid of a tragic fate. Through the close reading and the socio-historical background of the text itself, this thesis aims at validating the fact that the misery of the black females in this novel does not merely result from the racism impose by the white people, but the even more fatal and hidden tragedy is triggered by multiple forces which includes the loss of the black female’s culture and identity.
