Abstract  

Ernest Hemingway is an outstanding modern novelist in the 1920s and one of the representatives of the “Lost Generation”. His distinctive writing style characterized by economy and understatement, influenced the 20th-century fiction. His first novel The Sun Also Rises earned him reputation as a writer and considered to be his best work. In this novel, he successfully shaped the typical images of the “Lost Generation” such as Jake Barnes, Brett Ashley and Mike Champel. This paper begins with the brief introduction to Ernest Hemingway and this novel, and then makes an attempt to analyze the lost generation presented in this novel as well as their aimlessness, bewilderment, male insecurity, and tragic love, thus disclosing Hemingway’s condemnation of the destructiveness the war has brought and the great spiritual crisis of the capitalist world after the war.

摘要

海明威是20世纪20年代最著名的作家之一，同时也是“迷惘一代”的代表作家，他在经历了一战和战后经济危机后产生的特立独行的文笔影响了一个时代。他的第一部长篇小说《太阳照常升起》不仅让他蜚声文坛，更被后人称为他最优秀的小说。他成功地塑造了杰克•巴恩，勃莱特•阿施利和迈克•坎贝尔的典型形象。本文以简要介绍海明威以及小说情节为开端，然后分析这一特殊的时代以及主人公们对于生活的盲目和不知所措，对于爱情的不安全感和他们最终的爱情悲剧，从而揭示了海明威对于战争以及战后资本主义世界精神危机的谴责。

1.    Introduction
After World War I, many marvelous works reflecting the social life and spiritual status poured into the literary world because of the economic and political factors, among which the Lost Generation works were remarkable. The “Lost Generation” writers played a very important role in the history of American literature. Their works vividly reflected the life condition and spiritual world as well as exerted great influence on the American literature. Ernest Hemingway, as the spokesman of the “Lost Generation”, made the “Lost Generation” the writing tendency of young writers and signified their emotional world. His first novel, The Sun Also Rises, based on his rich and colorful life experience, reflected his inner world through his special writing style.
