Abstract
Ernest Hemingway is a famous American novelist, who has created lots of strong-willed characters in his works. But in his short story Cat in the Rain, he broke the limitation of male’s angle and described the heroine’s female consciousness. This thesis is an attempt to explore the relationship between different characters in order to analyze the factors of the awakening of the heroine’s female consciousness respectively in terms of external factors and internal factors, and thus discloses the fact that Hemingway shows his deep sympathy for the inferiority of the women at that time and meanwhile implies his expectation of the birth of their female consciousness.

摘 要
厄内斯特·海明威是美国著名的小说家。他一生在作品中创造了许多“硬汉”形象,但是在其短篇小说《雨中的猫》里海明威打破了男性的视角,描述了女主人公的女性意识的觉醒。本文试图从探索各个人物之间的关系出发,并从外因和内因两个角度来分析主人公女性意识的觉醒,从而揭示了作者海明威对那个时代女性卑微地位的同情,同时也表达了他对她们女性意识觉醒的期望。

1. Introduction
Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) is a famous American novelist. In his life he has created numerous outstanding works and impressive short stories, among which The Sun also Rises, Farewell to Arms are well known all over the world, especially the novel The Old Man and The Sea, which made him won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954. Hemingway has always been honored as the spiritual monument of the American nation, and he impressed people deeply as the image of a steel-willed man.
Hemingway suffered a lifetime of frustrations, no matter on the battlefield or on the way to Africa. During the World War Ⅰand World WarⅡ he was hit by the Austrian bomb with 263 shell fragments in the left leg. Moreover, on the way to Africa, two aviation accidents happened to him. However, his hurt was not only in the body but also in the heart. After he suffered such terrible and brutal experiences, Hemingway’s inner world has been overwhelmed, so that he was trapped in melancholy and held an attitude of skepticism to everything.
