1.1 Introduction to Margaret Mitchell
Gone with the Wind was written by Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) whose birthplace and living place was Atlanta, Georgia. Before the town of Atlanta was built, Margaret’s family had already managed cotton plantation near Atlanta. When the American Revolution broke out, she and her family lived in the South America. The relatives of Margaret’s had many kinds of careers. Some of them were cotton planters. And some were lawyers. Others were Methodist ministers. Eugene Mitchell, her father, was a famous lawyer. Her mother Mary Isabelle was a suffragist. Her parents were all born in the period after the Civil war. As a result, the Civil War had a deep impact on their lives. At the same time, it also influenced Margaret a lot. When she was a little girl, her family members told some old stories about the Civil War to her, which aroused her great interest. The stories became the best material for her writing. Her mother has a great impact on her. About 1900, Mitchell’s mother develops herself to be one of Atlanta’s leading women’s libbers. She often denounces the discrimination against women, which made the little Margaret a long and deep influence. In Margaret’s childhood, she was educated with feminism by her mother, which had conflicts with her father’s conservative ideas. Mitchell accepted her mother’s feminist thought and abandoned her father’s thought. Thus in her novel, we can always find her viewpoint of women’s independence and equality with men.
