Abstract
Margaret Drabble is a famous female writer in contemporary British literature field and The Millstone is her third novel and the representative work of her early works. This thesis uses feminist theory to analyze Rosamund’s love progress from three aspects—love of selfhood, straight love and maternal love. She changes from a woman doctor, who is ignorant of worldly affairs, to become a mature mother, and analyzing and reflecting on her feminist consciousness and its change.
This paper is divided into four parts: the first chapter is mainly the introduction to the author and works; the second chapter mainly discusses the feminist theory and the introduction to the author’s feminist consciousness; the third chapter mainly studies the heroine’s love progress; the fourth chapter is the summary and generalization of the article.

摘要
玛格丽特.德拉布尔是英国当代著名的女性主义作家,《磨砺》是其第三部小说,也是其早期作品的代表作。本文运用女性主义理论从三个方面来研究罗莎蒙德的爱路历程,即自爱、两性之爱和母爱。她从一个不谙世事的女博士成为一位成熟母亲的爱路历程,分析及体现在她身上的女性意识及其变化。
本文分为四个部分:第一章主要对作者及作品的介绍;第二章主要对女性主义理论和作者的女性主义意识的介绍;第三章主要是对女主人公的爱路历程进行研究与分析;第四章是对文章的总结与概括。

Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Margaret Drabble and The Millstone
Margaret Drabble, a famous contemporary British female writer, enjoys critical acclaim and great popularity home and broad. She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1980 Queen’s Birthday Honors. In 2006, the University of Cambridge awarded her an honorary Doctorate in Letters. In 2011, she was awarded the Golden PEN Award by English PEN for “a Lifetime’s Distinguished Service to Literature”.
Drabble was born on June the 5th in 1939. She was born in an intellectual family in Sheffield, England. Her parents both graduated from Cambridge University. John Drabble, her father, is a novelist, a barrister and a country court judge.Kathleen Drabble, her mother, before she got married, is an English teacher in a Quaker school, at the Mount in York. Her parents believe that women should receive education and go to work. Her parents pass the intellectual curiosity to her as well.Drabble has two sisters and one brother and each of them is outstanding in their fields. Her elder sister is Dame Antonia Byatt, a famous novelist and critic as well; her younger sister is Helen Langdon, an art historian; her brother, Richard Drabble, is a Queen’s Counsel.
