Abstract

Lord of the Flies is the master work of English writer William Golding who has won the Nobel Prize. It is an important philosophy as fiction to discuss “the evil of human nature” in naive children. It also shows the theme of redemption. “Beast” is an important image in the work. It symbolizes the evil in children’s heart. Lord of the Flies tells about children becoming savage to kill their opponents because of the inherent evil in their heart.
The pioneers have analyzed the symbolism of “beast”. They probed for the evil of humanity in Lord of the Flies by the symbolism of “beast”. This essay analyses the meanings and functions of “beast” in Lord of the Flies. It includes the origin and symbolism of “beast”, the position and translation to “beast”, children’s different attitudes to “beast” and how does Jack control others by “beast”. This essay has great significance to the study of the “beast” image.

《蝇王》是英国作家，诺贝尔文学奖获得者威廉·戈尔丁的代表作，是一部重要的哲理小说，借小孩的天真来探讨人性的“恶”这一严肃主题，同样也包含了“救赎”这一主题。“野兽”是这部作品中的重要意象，在文中多次出现。象征着人们内心的邪恶。《蝇王》讲述了一群天真的孩子被内心内心的“野兽”所影响，沦为野蛮人残杀同类的故事。
前人们通过对“野兽”意象的象征意义分析，从“野兽”到“假面”对《蝇王》这部作品中人性“恶”进行了探寻与研究。本文分析“野兽”意象在《蝇王》这部作品中的意义与功能，包括对“野兽”意象的来源探究，“野兽”的象征意义分析，“野兽”的定位与诠释，孩子们对“野兽”的不同态度，以及杰克如何利用“野兽”去控制其他孩子。本文对研究意象在作品中的意义与功能有一定的意义。

1.1 Introduction to the Author and His Novel Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies is the most representative and brilliant work written by William Golding, a British established writer. William Golding is one of the most famous novelists in the twentieth century, for awarding the Nobel Price for his first novel Lord of the Flies. He is the representative of literary realism. He has the special idea in creation of novel. In his work, we can always find the theme of evil and redemption. Because he studied in mission school for a long time and were filled with the thought of original sin. The other theme of his work is death. He wants to probe into the darkness in people’s heart.
