Abstract

Toni Morrison, a prominent African-American novelist in the world, won the Nobel Prize in 1993, and became the first black woman writer who got this significant prize.
The issue of Beloved shocked the literary world in America, and was regarded as a monument of the history of American blacks. The novel, through a straight infanticide case, reveals the heinous crime what slavery has committed to women and even a race and discloses the destruction of self both in psychology and physiology. As a branch of feminism, the research of Black Feminism literary theory focuses on the black women's gender discrimination, racial discrimination and class bias imposed by American society, such as multiple oppressions. It was adopted by Toni Morrison to reveal that black women are under the oppression of suffering, and provide them with some ways to get rid of miseries.
Starting from the perspective of Black Feminism, around the subject of self-seeking and awakening, this paper comprehensively analyzes the identity, personality and behavior of the main characters in this work, especially the three female representatives. The black women’ hardships will be shown when they are on the way of self-seeking.

Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Toni Morrison and Her Literary Works
As an American black woman, Toni Morrison was a great writer. She wasn’t born with a silver spoon in her mouth; instead, she was born in an ordinary family in steel city of Los Angeles Lean. Her father was just a blue-collar worker, and her mother was a maid who worked for white people. With excellent grades and good performance, Morrison was admitted to Howard University which was especially for black students in 1949. Her major was English and classical literature and this laid foundation for her writing. Right after she graduated, she went to the Cornell University for further study, specializing in novels, especially Faulkner’s and Wolff's novels. She did well and finally obtained a master's degree.
