Abstract:
From the behavior of the insane woman, this paper deals with the underlying causes of woman's insanity at that social environment---Male chauvinism. In the male-dominated society, women's insanity and the maltreating from the male have a natural link. By analyzing the reason why Bertha Mason got insane, this paper intends to solve the secret of the loss of woman's right. Bertha Mason is a character in the novel Jane Eyre, written by the famous 19th Century British writer Charlotte Bronte. Bertha is the wife of the man Rochester whom Jane loved. This paper tries to indicate how she was maltreated by her father and her husband, by analyzing her back ground and the way of her being marginalized. From the analysis of this character, people can see how phallus centric society discriminates and persecutes women in general so that people can further understand the loss of woman’s right and decentralize phallus centrism in society.

1. Introduction
Jane Eyre was a great novel of 20th century and it has kept its important place in literary at home and abroad until today. There have been many studies on Jane Eyre since it has been paid much attention. Many experts studied the heroine Jane Eyre who was brave, intelligent and tender. They have studied the character from many points of view, such as Jane’s character, class, ideal and values. But most of them neglected the other important woman in the novel. It is Bertha Mason. In the Jane Eyre, as we know, there was an insane woman who named Bertha Mason. In our mind it was a shock that the mad woman had been the wife of the hero Mr. Rochester. Here is the point, why Mr. Rochester had an insane wife and she was chained in the attic. Why did the writer create a character like this to obstructed Jane’s love to Rochester? Actually, Bertha was a warning for Jane. She exposed the nature of Rochester or the nature of men at that time. They were all authoritarian and cruel. They could deceive a pure lady like Jane to marry him as his wife still alive. As for Bertha, his wife, he tormented and abandoned her that the poor woman got mad. These statements are not unfounded. From the fragments of the novel we got some information about Bertha. Her madness was hereditary and got from her mother. However, when we reread those fragments about Bertha with calm we can find that all of that information was offered by Mr. Rochester. And from the speeches of Rochester we can easily found that he has been defended for himself. When we analysis the words out of Rochester from Bertha’s point of view, or from woman’s point of view we can discover the truth. Rochester was covering his crime to his wife. He described his wife as a woman who rotten to the core and he himself had almost no fault. I think it is not truth. Before I spread out my views we should learn some achievements our seniors gained.
