《红字》是美国小说家霍桑的第一部长篇小说，它的主题深刻，包括罪与赎罪，邪恶本性，理智与情感的冲突。霍桑称《红字》是“寓言式的传奇”。总的来说，它是根据故事主题，也就是它本身以及隐含的意义来设定的。大多数现代学者更加注重研究罪恶给道德、情感和心理造成的影响。作者狭隘的宗教信仰导致人们把齐灵渥斯看成是一个魔鬼。然而，人们却忽视了齐灵渥斯善良的一面-尽职尽责的丈夫，慈爱的父亲，拯救心灵的苦行僧，广施博爱的医生，博学多才的学者。所以，他给读者留下了了很深的印象也引起了人们对人性善与恶的思考。我们应该原谅那些知错能改的人，也应该引导他们做一个善良的人。我们应该本文通过对齐灵渥斯邪恶的表现和原因的分析来揭示他鲜为人知的优秀品质，从而突出他善良的一面，让我们对小说主题有更深层次的理解。

Abstract:

The Scarlet Letter is written by the American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, the themes of which are profound, including sin and redemption, nature of evil, the conflict between head and heart. Hawthorne called The Scarlet Letter an “allegorical romance.” In general, its plan is dictated by the theme of the story, that is to say, by its expressed and implied meaning. [1](272) Most modern scholars pay attention to studying the effect that the criminals have on the moral, emotion, mental. Therefore, it has far-reaching effect on modern society. The author’s narrow religious beliefs causes Chillingworth regarded as an evil.However, he has another side—a responsible father, a loving father, a saver of soul, a philanthropic doctor, a knowledge scholar, so it leaves readers deep impression and also causes the people to think about human nature as an angel and evil. We should forgive those person who makes the mistakes and we should guide them to be a good person. This article analyzes the performances and reasons of Chillingworth as an evil to reveal his rarely-known fine qualities. It also helps us to have deeper understanding about the novel’s theme.

1.    Introduction
The scarlet letter is a major breakthrough in the American novels. Its structure is tight, with all of the events interrelated and skillfully integrated into a logical sequence.The imagery is vivid, and the writing is consistent in its evocation of the somber reality of Puritan Boston. [2](P80)
He creates the heroes through the circumstance description, language description and the complex mental description to reveal the dark rule in the colonial period and against ruthless Calvin, which lead to a lot of people becoming the victim of the society and caused a lot of social tragedies. In The Scarlet Letter, it mainly described four heroes, Hester, Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and Pearl. These people have different fates, which called us to have sympathy for their misfortune, especially Chillingworth.
