二十世纪英国著名小说家——达芙妮·杜穆里埃的作品《蝴蝶梦》于1938年第一次发表后在文学界引起了强烈反响,并成为英国和美国的畅销书。本文通过对吕蓓卡的性格,生活经历以及社会背景的分析,尤其是吕蓓卡的丈夫迈克西姆的性格及他们的婚姻来剖析吕蓓卡的悲剧命运。本文侧重于从男主人公迈克西姆与吕蓓卡的婚姻中的矛盾冲突这一角度更深层次地探讨迈克西姆在吕蓓卡悲剧命运的形成过程中的角色定位。

Abstract:
Daphne du Maurier (1907-1990) is a famous English novelist in the twentieth century. Her masterpiece Rebecca made quite a slash in literary circles when it was first published in 1938 and became a bestseller in English and America. This paper analyses Rebecca’s tragic destiny through Rebecca’s character, life experiences and social background and, especially, the character of Rebecca’s Maxim and their marriage. Focusing on the point of the contradiction in the marriage between Maxim and Rebecca, it further discusses the role that Maxim plays in the process of Rebecca’s traffic destiny.

1. Introduction
Daphne du Maurier (1907-1990) is a famous female author in England. Her masterpiece Rebecca made quite a slash in literary circles when it was first published in 1938 and became an English and American bestseller.[1](P1) The novel tells a complex abnormal marriage story about a British noble family. Daphne shaped a mysterious female Rebecca in her novel. This person had been dead before the story began and mentioned only in flashback paragraph.[2](P1) She never appeared in this book but readers can feel her everywhere. All her figures present to us through other people’s descriptions. For a long time, some scholars think Rebecca is a negative figure and they think Rebecca should be responsible for her abnormal marriage. Her character is not the only origin of her tragic destiny after combined her life experiences. This paper analyses Rebecca’s tragic destiny through Rebecca’s character, life experiences and social background and especially analyses the character of Maxim and their marriage. Focusing on the point of the contradiction in the marriage between Maxim and Rebecca, it further discusses the role that Maxim plays in the process of Rebecca’s traffic destiny.
