Abstract:
The novel the House on Mango Street is Sandra Cisneros's most famous work. The heroine Esperanza, who is a little girl faced with feminism, racial oppression, identity, ethnic conflicts, sex discrimination, cultural differences and so on. From this verse novel,we can not only see the edge's embarrassed identity and poverty in the mainstream culture, but also feel their sensitive and strong heart. This work is a very good material to study the ethnic literature and is of great significance. It may appear simple at the first reading and seems that there is no connection from part to part, but all pieces reflect the common problems.
Key words:feminism;racial oppression;identity;ethnic conflicts;sex discrimination;cultural differences
1. Introduction
Chicanas 's social position is very low in the United States. They are "neither white nor black, but brown",and maybe everyone feels confused about his identity. Facing the two cultures, they can't integrate into either. Without a sense of belonging, they don't know how to define themselves. Neither pure Mexican nor full American, they become "the other" in the United States. Suffering from the identity crisis,Chicanas degenerate into the double. Since identity is an important aspect to discuss American politics, the construction of ethnic minority images can reflect the contradiction between the mainstream culture and the ethnic culture. To focus on the theme of Chicana's identity can dig out how Chicanas struggle to get out of the double oppression dilemma and search for identity. To answer the question of "Who am I" faced by Chicanas can help Chicanas define themselves appropriately and improve their social and cultural status.
2. main body
The 4 parts constitutes the whole paper, and presents my opinions about the work.
2.1 Some meaningful analysis of this novel
The first few sections of The House on Mango Street suggest that Esperanza will focus on the importance and experiences of her family, but this focus eventually expands. Esperanza's family and house fill these first few sections,so specifically that Esperanza even discusses the security she finds in the smell of her mother's hair. However, the introduction of the family is only an introduction to what will become Esperanza's large family, the barrio. She may find comfort in her mother's hair, but Esperanza does not actually mention her mother again for another thirty-five sections. Although the novel begins narrowly, with the immediate family and house as subjects,Mango Street itself, with its larger community, eventually occupies Esperanza's life, with home and family constituting only the starting point.
