Abstract:
Charles Dickens, one of the greatest writers in Victorian Age, is good at describing the life and conditions in mid-nineteenth century London. His early works emphasize his belief of goodness; Oliver Twist is one of them. The greatness of Dickens lies in the fact that he creates several vivid and lively characters of different personalities. The most well-known and successful thing is that he created several typical and symbolic characters, such as the good and honest Oliver and the most complex character Nancy. All these characters make a strong impression on the readers. This paper attempts to analyze the different personalities of these characters and deeply research the author’s intentions in creating these characters, which promotes further understanding of the theme and social background of Oliver Twist.

1. Introduction
Goodness is one of the most essential characters for a person and it will never be out of date. People who own the quality of goodness are supposed to own happiness in a sense. Goodness can help us overcome every difficulty people may meet or at least remain human being in a positive mind. The person who owns the character of goodness undoubtedly will be happier than the one who is evil-minded, for goodness is such a thing that will benefit others as well as the people who are being kind. People should keep goodness in their mind, regardless of the conditions they are in. However, it is surprisingly that an increasing number of people seem to ignore the significance of goodness. They despise people who are honest and kind-hearted, regarding that they are brainlessness and show little sympathy to those who are in trouble. Moreover, they do harm to those who prevent them from the way to get money and power. In their eyes, nothing is more important than themselves. It is evident that such kind of people will never get real happiness in their whole life as result of the countless desire.
