简·奥斯汀（1775-1817）是19世纪英国杰出的现实主义女作家，《傲慢与偏见》是其主要代表作。小说讲述了小乡绅贝纳特有五个待字闺中的千金，贝纳特太太整天操心着为女儿物色称心如意的丈夫。其中主要介绍了二女儿伊丽莎白·贝内特与有钱单身汉达西之间的爱情故事。由于学界问题，他们通常把眼光聚焦在对作品中的爱情婚姻观的研究，因此对次要人物母亲的形象解析甚少。本文分为三部分。第一部分分析了简·奥斯汀的社会背景。第二部分描述了19世纪中产阶级妇女的社会地位和工业革命所影响的妇女的家庭婚姻观。第三部分结合小说分析两位母亲贝内特夫人和凯瑟琳夫人的形象。从而得出结论：两位母亲的形象具有双面性：既可笑自私各有缺点，却都深爱着自己的孩子。

Abstract
  Jane Austen (1775-1817) is a prominent realist writer of the 19th century in Britain. Pride and Prejudice is her main representative works. The Novel tells the story of the little squire Bennett has five daughters who stay in the boudoir waiting to be betrothed, Mrs Bennett worry about daughters’ marriage and wants to look for a nice husband for her daughter the whole day. In the story, it mainly introduces the love story between the second daughter, Elizabeth Bennett and rich bachelors Darcy. Because of the academic circles, researchers usually put eyes to focus on the study of love marriage. So they pay little attention to the image analysis of the minor characters mothers.This paper is divided into three parts. Part one analyzes Jane Austen’s social background. Part two shows the 19th century middle-class women's status and the industrial revolution which affected their marriage and family. Part three analyzes the two mother Mrs Bennett and lady Catherine's image in the novel. Then this paper draws a conclusion that two mothers have two-sided images. They are all ridiculous and selfish and have shortcoming, but all love their children.

1  Introduction
    In the 19th century, Jane Austen was a famous British female novelist. Her novels mostly wrote her familiar so-called respectable people life as well as the relationship between them. When a reader gives a glimpse of ordinary trivial, he will find these petty, economic relations and the structure of English society in her eyes. Especially in the novel Pride and Prejudice , it shows the relationship between love and marriage. Marriage has always relations with all kinds of social issues and economic problems .The author always use clear ink and penetrating eyes to reveal the marriage essence of capitalism which is nothing but money transactions and the combination of interests. From her novel, we can know, in her time, a good marriage for a young woman is vital and it has to do with the British society and the social status of women. There was not equality between men and women in the 19th century. Women were considered not to be equal to men in terms of intelligence and ability. Their life are at the center of the family and their role is nothing but having a child and in charge of the housework at the same time. Therefore, for young women, if they don't have much property, marriage is their only way to gain respect, stability and social status. So in the novel, as a mother the two ladies have different status and different personality. Mrs. Bennet is funny and shallow while Lady Catherine is arrogant and always on her high horse, but they have one thing in common. They all worry about their daughters’ marriage. Both of them hope that daughters can marry rich bachelors.
