Abstract: Since the further development of the 1960s’ western women’s liberation movement, study of gender differences and language has been a very important topic of community research, and the same in the field of linguistics. With the development of woman’s social status, the research on this phenomenon has been more and more widely. Language is an indispensable part of social life, but also the important tool of human communication. Gender differences in language are a very common phenomenon in the society. In many domestic literatures, there are less literatures which can analyze the gender differences and its causes in English language detailed and thoroughly. This paper is composed of five parts; firstly, the paper will make a brief introduction of gender differences, including its definition and significance. Secondly, the paper will make a brief review of the related domestic and abroad researches about gender differences. Thirdly, it will make a simple research on the performances of gender differences in English language. And then, it will make an analysis of the causes of gender differences in English language. The last part is conclusion. I look forward to making some contributions to the further research. And I hope through this paper, we can improve the understanding of the gender and language, reduce the mistakes of the communication between the male and female, and prevent the sexism during the use of language.

摘 要：自20世纪60年代西方妇女解放运动深入发展以来，性别差异与语言的研究一直是社会各界研究的一个非常重要的课题，在语言学界也是如此。随着妇女地位的提高，人们对这一现象的研究也越来越广泛。语言是社会中不可或缺的一部分，也是人类交流的重要工具。语言中的性别差异是一种普遍存在的社会现象。在国内很多的文献中，很少有文献可以把英语语言中的性别差异及其成因分析的详细透彻的。本文分为五个部分，第一部分本文会对性别差异做个绪论，包括定义和研究的意义。第二部分是国内外的相关研究现状。第三部分对英语中性别差异的表现形式做简明分析。第四部分会对造成差异的原因进行分析。第五部分是本文的结论。我希望对未来的研究能够作出些许贡献。也希望通过本文，我们能提高对性别与言语的认识，减少男女之间交流产生的错误，防止语言使用过程中产生性别歧视。

Language is an indispensable part of social life, but also the important tool of human communication. Gender differences in language are a very common phenomenon in the society. So this paper try to from the perspective of sociolinguistics exploring the differences between the male and female in the use of vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation, sentence structure and conversational style, then analyzing the causes of the differences.
