Abstract:
The Progress of Love which was published in 1986 is considered to be the best short story of the contemporary Canadian woman writer, Alice Munro. Munro gains the Governor General’s Award for the third time because of this novel. Alice Munro’s works focus on people’s living conditions and marital relationships in daily life. In this story, there are four main characters, Fame, mother, father, Beryl. The values, personalities and choices of life play an important role in one’s life. This paper mainly discusses the love view by analyzing the differences among the four main characters. Munro’s writing shows us a real life which is simple but vivid, and brings a deep and sincere emotion. The text is simple but has profound meanings which exactly show the most intimate charm of literature. The love view is a person’s general opinion and attitude to the love issues which exists in their relationships. It is the embodiment of one’s outlook on the world, life and values, as well as the guidance of their love and marriage. Love should be a communication between individuals. It is a process during which the couple will support and promote each other, and constantly improve themselves. Undoubtedly, love is thought-provoking, and it will make people develop toward goodness.

《爱的进程》出版于1986年,被认为是当代加拿大女作家艾丽斯·门罗最好的短篇小说,令门罗第三次斩获加拿大最高文学奖——总督文学奖。门罗的小说着眼于日常生活中人们的生活状态和婚姻关系。本论文涉及四个主要人物:费玛、母亲、父亲、贝瑞尔。一个人的人生观,个性及对爱情的选择往往对他们的生活有很大影响。本论文通过对主要人物形象的分析来探讨爱情观。门罗笔触简单朴素,但却细腻地刻画出生活平淡真实的一面,给人带来真挚深沉的情感,简单的文字意蕴深远,这恰好显示了文学最本质的魅力。爱情观是一个人对爱情问题的根本看法和态度,是一个人的世界观、人生观、价值观在恋爱婚姻问题上的体现,对人们的恋爱婚姻实践起着导向作用。爱情应当是两个个体之间的交流,是两个人相互支持,相互促进,不断完善彼此的过程。爱情无疑是使人向善、向上、向美的力量,发人深省。

1.1 The Influence of Alice Munro’s Life
This part is to introduce Alice Munro, her writing career and achievements which are well-known all over the world and she won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. Alice Munro was born in the town of Wingham in Canada, and she came from a family of poultry farmer. She is doubtlessly a sensitive and compassionate writer of our time. Bringing us into the most intimate views of ordinary lives, she reveals much about ourselves, our choice, and our experience of love. Munro was considered one of the three main female writers in Canada, sharing the remarkable status with Margaret Laurence and Margaret Atwood.
