Introduction
Alice Munro is a well-known authoress writing in English, who has produced over 100 short stories throughout her writing career. She is honored as the contemporary Chekhov. On October 10, 2013, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, cited as “master of the contemporary short story”. And she is the first Canadian and the 13th woman receiving such an honor. She always lays stress on the characterization of females who are common people in daily life. Run Away is published in 2004, including eight short stories. And among them, only three stories, Chance, soon, silence are interlinked, telling a whole story about the same female character named Juliet. This thesis includes four stories-Runaway, Chance, Soon, Silence.
The thesis aims to provide more knowledge about Munro’s Run Away for readers and calls for more attention to woman in modern society. Having a clear idea of these female characters’ choices in a dilemma will give us a more profound understanding of women’s attitudes towards family, marriage and some experience most people must endure the lifetime.
