Introduction
Thomas Hardy was an outstanding British realism novelist and poet at the end of the nineteenth century. He was a famous novelist following Dickens and Thackeray, holding a unique status as Dante. He was just like a bridge in English Literature, not only using his realistic creation to inherit and carry forward the traditional English Literature, but also correlating tradition with contemporary literature relying on his unique creation mode .
China had experienced three stages to the works of Hardy. The first stage was the beginning of translation and achieved preliminary achievements. In the second stage, Hardy’ s translation work tends to be comprehensive in-depth, discussing the related works’ character meaning and theme and exclusively using the method of critical realism to examine Hardy’ s novels. Many ideas had certain limitations. It emphasized the ideological content of the works, while neglecting the use of the artistic skills. The main feature of the third phase was the translation and research that advanced side by side.
