Abstract
Toni Morrison’s novels always pay attention to the living state of black women. Fathers are always regarded as the first spiritual support for black women. To a large extent, paternal love is the key point determining whether black women are happy or not. In Toni Morrison’s novel, Love, Bill Cosey is an idealized father. Based on the inductive analysis of Bill Cosey, the black father figure, this thesis tends to explore black father’s function in black communities and influence to black women.
In the black community, an imagined father is created to meet the demand of a great father figure in the particular social context. The construction of Bill Cosey as a protective father is the outcome of this demand. A symbolic father in the eyes of three black girls, Heed, Christine and Junior is idealized as Bill Cosey, who meets their imagination of a perfect father. In fact, Bill Cosey, who is regarded as the real representative of a great father figure in the whole black community, and is the reliable spiritual support for three black girls, is not only a normal man but also an ugly father. The true features of Bill Cosey are restored by L’ narration and Sandler’s description..
To a large extent, the extreme gap between the imagined father figure and the real one causes the black women to suffer more than their male counterparts. The women’s voices tend to be ignored and neglected. What’s worse, in the patriarchal society, the predominate father figure shadows the possible alliance between the black woman and makes it hard for them to gain spiritual support from each other. The damage of friendships and lack of mutual trust often lead to the tragedy of black women.
