摘要：

《名利场》是英国维多利亚时期著名小说家威廉·梅克比斯·萨克雷的代表作品之一。在这部作品中，萨克雷揭示了资本主义制度下人们的生活状态和生活观念，嘲讽了当时英国社会金钱至上的观念和资本主义制度的实质，批判了人性的贪得无厌、矫揉造作和冷酷无情。某种程度而言，《名利场》是社会现实的缩影。多种多样的人物性格，错综复杂的社会关系，发人深省。本论文从对话和故事情节角度分析所塑造的人物性格，分析作者所描述的社会现实。萨克雷创作的人物角色丰富，如聪明美艳但工于心计的夏泼， 善良漂亮但缺乏独立思想的艾米利亚， 玩世不恭但感情专一的罗登， 相貌英俊但生性高傲的乔治,对爱情忠贞但生性胆小的乔瑟夫,为爱付出但又不敢袒露心声的都宾。在这部作品中，没有英雄，每个人物都有自己的闪光点和不足。也正是这样才让小说中的人物更贴近生活，惟妙惟肖，栩栩如生。本论文希望通过对作品中人物性格的分析，更好地理解萨克雷是如何揭示当时社会现状的。

Abstract:

Vanity Fair is one of the outstanding works in Victorian Era by British writer William Makepeace Thackeray. Thackeray revealed the people’s attitude toward life and the conditions of life under capitalist system. He also jeered at the Britain substance of capitalism and concept which only saw money as most important things. This novel criticizes the vanity, avarice and callosity of people under capitalist system. To some extent, Vanity Fair is an epitome of modern society. Various characters and perplexing social relations depicted in this novel all make people lost in thought. This thesis analyzes the characters and social realities from the aspects of dialogues and plots. Thackeray gave vivid descriptions about the characters in it. For example, Sharp is intelligent and glamorous but she is calculating; Amelia is pretty but lacks the thought of independent; Rawdon is cynical but emotionally-specific to his wife; George is a smart man but he is so arrogant; Joseph is loyal but he is timid and shy by nature; and Dobbin is generous but he is afraid of expressing his own feelings. There is no hero in this novel, and each of them has his/her own highlight and disadvantage. Because of this, the characters in this novel can be created colourful and vivid. This thesis wishes to offer the readersa better understanding about the social reality revealed by Thackeray through the characters’ analyses.
