1. Introduction
Although with the development of society, economy, and culture today, women are more important and have more profound impact than before. The male dominance in people’s mind becomes weaker with the development of the movement of women’s liberation. In our daily life, especially in some undeveloped regions, women are still at a low position in their family and the society. They are not independent in economic and have no chance to pursue the life they want. They have to take care of their children and their men. Their husbands do not think there is a need that women have their own thoughts. Only if women can take care of their family, that is enough. There are also some different expressions of male dominance in literature works. In some works, male characters are better than female characters because of the male dominance in the author’s mind. In other works, the author tries to expose the male dominance in the character’s mind. From the perspective of contrasts of characters, this thesis analyzes the male dominance in the drama of The Crucible which was written by an American writer, Arthur Miller. The female characters are evil and weak in this drama, while the male character is brave and justice. Arthur Miller exposes his male dominance by subliming the spirits of male character and belittling the female characters.
