摘要：

《嘉莉妹妹》讲述了乡村姑娘嘉莉到芝加哥谋生成为演员的故事。本论文从消费主义视角分析《嘉莉妹妹》这部小说。在《嘉莉妹妹》中，消费主义不仅仅体现在金钱的消费上，还有对于情感和身体的消费。与此同时，这三种消费形式又是互相依存的。20世纪初，资本主义高速发展，是美国中产阶级家庭疯狂消费的年代。大部分城市居民沉迷于玩乐与享受。有些人甚至将享受看作一种责任。无论吃穿用戴，人们都将邻居看作自己的榜样，不甘居人后。当然，随着时间的推移以及人们心理的变化，单纯的物质消费也早已不能满足人们的欲望。消费主义的盛行对于很多商人以及贵妇的消费方式都有着潜移默化的影响。并且对于嘉莉这种乡村女孩的价值观也产生巨大的改变。

Abstract: 

Sister Carrie tells a story about a village girl who makes a living in Chicago and finally becomes an actress. This paper analyzes the Sister Carrie from the consumerism perspective. In Sister Carrie, the consumerism is not only about material, but also has the emotion and physical. At the mean time, these three consumption patterns depend on each other for existence. In the beginning of the 20th century, the capitalist economy has made rapid progress. The American middle class family is in the time of crazy consumption. The most people are addicted to enjoyment and libertinism. Some people even take the enjoyment as responsibility. Whatever the food or clothing, the people always put the others as role models and never allow themselves behind others. Of course, With the passage of time and the change of people’s heart, the material consumption cannot satisfy the people’s desire. The prevalence of consumerism has subtle effect to businessmen and rich women. At the mean time, the Carrie also gets the great change from the influence of consumerism.
