Abstract
The paper analyzes the “new world” and the “old world” in Kazuo Ishiguro’s fiction Never Let Me Go. From the perspective of Sartre’s Existentialism, the paper discloses the illusory nature of the seemingly happy “old world” represented by Hailsham, proving that Hailsham provides the clones with happy memories in their childhood, while misleads them in the way of recognizing the real world. Then the paper explores the clones’ difficulties and the relevant psychological changes caused by the coming of the “new world” , including doubts and reconstruction of self-identity, self-deception and the belief of pursuing freedom in a set fate. The paper also presents the allusion of the two worlds to our real world and Ishiguro’s understanding of the theme of the novel, displaying the collective living status of the inferior people symbolized by the clones in the novel, so as to achieve the goal of realizing individual existence, getting rid of the confinement of power politics to the freedom of individual’s body and humanity, and encouraging people to pursue personal freedom.

As one of the most celebrated contemporary novelists of English-speaking world, Kazuo Ishiguro has received four Man Booker Prize nominations, and won the prize for his 1989 work The Remains of the Day. In 2005 Ishiguro’s new novel Never Let Me go was named by Time magazine the best fiction novel of 2005. The book illustrates the story about a special group of human---- the clones, whose organs are to be harvested at a certain time, but they have no rights to refuse this cruel exploitation. Although living in fear and anxiety, many of them, represented by the heroine and hero, Kathy and Tommy, have struggled to create their unique meaning of life, thus metaphorically displaying a picture of human-beings’ living status. This theme is of great significance to examine the mechanism of modern society, and to explain phenomenon and problems of human’s development. Through analyzing and comparing the “old world” and “new world”, this paper discusses human’s collective living condition, trying to explain human’s nature for freedom and the recognition of identity.
