摘要

本论文分析了索尔·贝娄小说《雨王亨德森》中主人公亨德森美国梦的迷失和找寻，分析了亨德森的从精神失落到成为乐于助人的精神成长。论文认为，亨德森的非洲之旅是一个寻找内心自我的过程，亨德森不断追寻着存在的价值，超越了对物质的追求，最终实现了自我的尊严。亨德森寻找自我的过程，某些层面上说也是美国梦的找寻。亨德森从梦想迷失面对恐惧，到获得精神成长的过程，是从自我走向超我的升华和跨越。

Abstract

This paper endeavors to analyze the lost and found of the American Dream as seen in the protagonist Henderson in Saul Bellow’s novel Henderson the Rain King. It also analyzes the spiritual growth of Henderson from a spiritually lost rich man to a satisfied man willing to offer help. The paper proposes that, the traveling to Africa is an important journey and search for Henderson’s inner self. By realizing his value of existence in the African tribes and becoming the much admired Rain King, Henderson goes beyond the pursuit of material wealth and finds his true dignity. In a way, the search for his inner self and the journey to Africa is a looking for his American Dream. From the state of a loss of dream to finally overcoming his fear, Henderson not only gains his spiritual growth, but also achieves a giant leap forward from his mere self to a unity and organic whole of being.
