摘要

纳撒尼尔·霍桑是19世纪美国著名的浪漫主义和心理小说家。霍桑的短篇小说极其富有象征性，而他也被称为“象征主义大师”。短篇小说《小伙子古德曼·布朗》是一篇典型霍桑运用象征主义写法的佳作，也是早期象征主义文学的代表作。该小说运用了很多象征性的暗喻手法。主人公的描述和事件的描写都揭露出深刻的精神和道德主题。因此本文主要从人物、场景、事物、心里描述以及主题的象征这四个方面探讨《小伙子古德曼·布朗》中的象征主义写作手法和象征意义。

Abstract

Nathaniel Hawthorne is the great American romantic novelist during 19 century and the pioneer of psychological analyst in the history of American literature. He has been known as “The master of symbolism” and his short stories are mostly symbolic. Young Goodman Brown is a typical short story by Hawthorne. He uses symbolism in the writing and it is regarded as a representative work of early symbolism literature. The novel uses a lot of symbolic metaphor technique. The hero’s depiction and events’ description all reveal a deeper spiritual and moral meaning. Young Goodman Brown takes the form of allegory which full of symbolism. Hence, this paper mainly seeks the symbolism and the deep meaning in Young Goodman Brown through the four categories of character, scene, objet, theme and psychological description.
