摘要

福克纳是美国著名作家，他的许多作品都反映了当时南方社会思想上的弊端。《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》就是这样一篇短篇小说，它讲述了南方贵族小姐爱米丽单身多年后与北方男人赫默陷入情网，却因背叛而毒杀了他的故事。通过对小说本身的研读以及对历史资料的查阅，本文认为爱米丽的悲剧发生并不是偶然，是多种因素共同作用下的必然结果。本文将从社会环境、父权制的影响以及爱米丽自身的性格三方面阐述当时南方社会所存在的清教思想、妇道观以及父权制等对爱米丽产生的负面作用。现在的社会与之前已大不相同，人们越来越重视人性的自由。爱米丽的悲剧再发生的可能性十分之小，人们除了应该感到欣慰之外也更因以史为鉴，保持思想的开放和社会的进步。

Abstract

William Faulkner is a famous American author, and many of his novels reflects the abuses of Southern society. A Rose for Emily is such a short novel which tells the story of a noble--Miss Emily, who fell in love with a northern man after being single for many years but finally poisoned him because of his betrayal. Through reading A Rose for Emily for many times and researching relevant historical materials, this paper thinks that Emily’s tragedy do not happen by accident and it’s caused by many unavoidable factors. This paper will discuss that problem from three aspects: the Patriarchy, the Puritanism and Southern Lady hood and Emily’s character. Nowadays, freedom of humanity gets more and more attention from people and society so that the possibility of tragedies like Emily is very small. People should be delighted about that and also take the history as a warning.
