Abstract
Rebecca is considered Daphne du Maurier’s masterpiece and one of the most famous novels in the 20th century. Her degenerate image has been ever criticized by many critics and readers. The overwhelming criticism mainly raised by a number of people who pay much more attention to the life and characters of Rebecca. They argue that it is a tragedy for Maxim to marry Rebecca, because her behaviors insult the social morality and subvert the traditional stereotype---“family angel”. The thesis aims to redefine as a new woman with beauty and wisdom from a new perspective. By connecting the concept of androgyny with the analysis of Rebecca’s characters, the paper indicates that Daphne du Maurier created Rebecca mainly to convey her protest against patriarchal society. This masterpiece reflects the author’s seeking for the equality and balance between male and female. In a patriarchal society, Rebecca is doomed to be misunderstood. And her final tragedy is inevitable.
