Abstract

The Million Pound Bank Note written by the American famous writer Mark Twain is a world-renowned short story. Mark Twain was one of superstars in human history. He was America’s most famous humorist and the author of popular and outstanding autobiographical works, travel books and novels.  
The Million Pound Bank Note was written in 1893. It told a story about a young but penniless guy, Henry. He got a million pound bank note from two odd gentlemen. People showed respect to him. Besides, he was given good accommodation and other things. In the end, he not only got an amount of 200,000 pounds, but also married a beautiful and young lady. America then was in the period of Industrial Revolution. The hedonism was gradually spreading in the whole country. Material was paid the most attention to. People were eager to have more and more money. Besides, they were divided into the high and the low according to the money that they owned.
Firstly, this dissertation makes a precise description of the author and the novel. Then, it analyzes the concrete of the money worship. It means that people like money very much, just like they love their heroes. Besides，they see money as their priorities and the primary things.
Then, it revealed the concrete meaning of money worship in the context. There are three aspects. Firstly, money can determine people’s fates: Henrys’ fate was absolutely changed because he owned the million pound bank note. Secondly, money can affect people’s status: Henry got higher and higher social status with the money. Thirdly, money can contribute to good marriage: Henry fell in love with Miss Lang ham in a dinner party which people from the lower class did not have access to.

《百万英镑》是一篇世界著名的短篇小说，由美国著名作家马克·吐温所写，他是人类历史上的巨星之一。同时也是美国有名的幽默家。写过杰出的传记作品，旅行日记及小说。
《百万英镑》写于1893年。讲述了一个故事，一个身无分文的年轻人，亨利。从两个怪异的老绅士那里得到了一张百万英镑。人们处处尊敬他，为他提供住处以及给他其他方便。最后，亨利不仅得到了20万英镑，而且娶了一位年轻又漂亮的女士。美国当时正处于工业革命时期。享乐主义席卷全国。人们十分重视物质，也想挣更多更多钱。此外，社会也以财富划分等级。
首先，这篇论文对作者以及小说作了简要介绍。然后分析了拜金主义的详细含义。拜金主义指人们十分爱钱，就像他们爱自己的偶像那样。并且，他们把钱作为第一要义以及最重要的东西。
然后，本篇论文结合小说分析了拜金主义的具体含义。有三点，首先，金钱可以决定人的命运：因为有了百万英镑,亨利的命运就被彻底的改变了。第二点，金钱可以影响人的地位，因为有钱，亨利的社会地位越来越高。第三点，金钱可以带来好姻缘：亨利在晚宴上与朗汉姆小姐一见钟情，而这个晚宴是上等人才能参加的。
