Abstract
The Catcher in the Rye is a novel of the American author, J. D. Salinger. The story is very simple, which just describes the protagonist Holden’s street life in New York in three days, and profoundly presents a lost spiritual journey of a young man.
Through the person Holden, the novel expresses the contradiction between the American material life and the lack of spiritual life after the Second World War.
As an excellent Bildungsroman, the novel always brings perception of spiritual growth to the readers. This novel has received a mixed reaction, but its readership has increased drastically, and today it is still at the top of the U. S. Bestseller list.
Based on these previous studies, the present thesis makes an analysis of the protagonist Holden’s spiritual journey including confusion, rebellion, pursuit and compromise, and ultimately achieving sudden enlightenment. To sum up, this thesis tries to tell the readers that one should accommodate oneself to live in the society.
Key words: Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye, contradiction, rebellion, sudden enlightenment
