Abstract
Theodor Dreiser’s book Sister Carrie takes the protagonist’s (Carrie’s) growing up as the mainline, focusing on depicting Carrie’s individual development. This paper will use Lukacs’s theory of materializing to analyze Carrie’s character and her interpersonal relationship, then further reveal the people’s alienation shaped by modern industrial civilization, especially women’s alienation. While criticizing the industrial civilization, this paper will also show the deep sympathy to the alienated women.
The sharp bulging of the modern men-oriented city and the booming of  industrial civilization made the alienation of women. The city’s environment, and commercialization, spiritually affects many farming girls like sister Carrie, alienating them from honest farming girls into empty people without any moral sense and soul. This book arouse people’s question on values of material civilization and spiritual civilization. In the days of booming material wealth and, one of the ways to spiritual redemption and harmony is to re-scan the spiritual ecology, which is also an important enlightenment from Sister Carrie.

西奥多•德莱塞的《嘉莉妹妹》以主人公嘉莉的成长为主线，着重刻画了嘉莉的个人成长发展以及追求的幻灭，作者同时将该小说置于广阔的美国社会背景下，以工业文明下商品社会冷漠的人际关系为视角，揭示了工业文明下人的异化现象。本文将运用卢卡奇的物化理论来分析嘉莉的成长及其所处的人际关系，从而解读其异化主题，进而揭示西方工业文明对人所造成的异化，特别是对女性的异化。在鞭挞工业文明和父权制的同时本文还表达了对异化女性的深深同情。
以男性为主体的现代城市的迅速膨胀和城市工业文明的迅猛发展与生活在其中的女性的异化是同步发展的，物质商品化、精神真空化和生存疏离化的城市生态环境使许多“嘉丽妹妹”从淳朴的乡下女蜕变为城市中待价而沽的商品，成为道德空白和灵魂迷失的“空心人”，从而使得人们对物质文明的价值意义产生了疑问，对精神文明的指归发出了质疑。在物质财富空前繁盛和男性话语仍处强势的当下，人类实现精神救赎和取得和谐的路径之一就是重新审视城市化进程中的精神生态和女性伦理，这是《嘉丽妹妹》在当下阅读的一个重要启示。
