Abstract
Malamud grew up striving for his success in the unbalanced collision of the contemporary American culture and the traditional Jewish culture.Therefore his emotions for these two cultures are confused and conflicting, which are deeply reflected in his works, in particular in the most autobiographical work, The Assistant. This thesis will try to analyze the suffering theme and the conflicting minds of the main characters on the basis of a full understanding of the source of the author’s ambivalence  in two cultures. In the novel, Morris, as a first-generation American Jewish immigrant, tries to seek survival and development in the United States with Jewish culture in his blood.Even a man with such strong attachment to his own traditions holds conflicting feelings in the face of the two cultures. His daughter Helen is also the mirror of the author. Their contradiction reflects the sorrow of all sub-cultures in the mainstream cultures.

马拉默德是在当代美国文化与传统犹太文化不平衡的碰撞中成长并走向成功的。对于两种文化，他内心是迷惑而矛盾的，这种迷惑与矛盾在其作品中都有充分的体现，尤其是其自传性最强的《店员》。鉴于这一点，本文将从马拉默德这样的“双重身份”出发，在充分理解其矛盾内心的产生根源的基础上，通过对 《店员》受难主题及主要人物内心的进行解读，达到深刻认识作者矛盾内心的目的。小说中莫里斯是第一代美国犹太移民，身上承载着厚重的犹太文化，在美国寻求生存与发展；即使是他这样的传统人物，也流露出了对两种文化的矛盾感情。其女儿海伦更是作者内心矛盾的再现。这样的矛盾折射出主流文化下亚文化生存的悲凉。

Bernard Malamud, a major contemporary Jewish American writer, was born in 1914 in Brooklyn, where is the home to one of the largest Jewish community in New York. His parents were among those over 2 million Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jews, mainly coming from poor rural areas of the Russian Empire and Eastern Europe, who arrived in the United States between 1890 and 1924. His mother died when he was 14 years old. He and his younger brother were raised by their father who worked long hours running a small grocery. His father gave him a sense of sweet humanity.
