Abstract
This thesis takes the play as the point of departure to decode the destiny of the protagonist Eliza of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, and analyses three different endings resulting from Eliza’s choice. Then it introduces two classics, namely ancient Greek myth Pygmalion and His Statue and the fairy tale Cinderella, to approach the rationality of the first two possible endings. Finally, it goes on to study the reason why Shaw chooses the third ending. In terms of his living social environment and literary and feminist viewpoints, it concludes that the ending is based on Shaw’s critical realism and support for women liberation.

1.Introduction
George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1925, is an outstanding realistic Irish dramatist, literary critic, a socialist spokesman. He is considered to be the greatest playwright in England since Shakespeare. In his life, he has written 51 famous plays, which are widely considered as the mainstream in the 20th century English theatre. As a Fabianist, Shaw pays great attention to social and economic problems as well as political events, thus his plays are concerned with realistic problems rather than theatrical entertainment. Generally speaking, his plays can be divided into three major branches: unpleasant plays, pleasant plays and plays for Puritans. Some of his most famous plays are Widowers’ Houses, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Major Barbara, and Pygmalion.
