Abstract
This essay rereads Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights from the hero Heathcliff, pointing out that the criticism too much on Heathcliff is not logical. Then this essay will explain why this mode of thinking is illogical from three aspects: from the indivisible relation between the living environment, the character and the destiny of Heathcliff ,delving into the tragic fate of Heathcliff from the course and result of the hero’s change from a kind boy, seeking for love to an unscrupulous avenger in that background.
Key words: environment; character; tragic destiny ; Heathcliff
1.Introduction
Wuthering Heights was written by British writer Emily Bronte. It is Emily’s only novel, published in the December of 1847. From the time the book published, the novel was criticized because of its rare content and unique artistry, especially the hero Heathcliff, rejected by the readers because of his evil image. The author put great emphasis on the image of Heathcliff. In the novel, the hero Heathcliff was twisted by the evil society. Based on the analysis of the original writing, the story reveals that the tragedy of Heathcliff is a tragedy of both society and love, as well as a tragedy of his personality.
1.1 The literature reviews on Heathcliff
Wuthering Heights was focused on when it came into being. With the development of literary history, many a scholar has devoted their energy into the study of character Heathcliff and brought out a variety of theories about it. For example, William Somer East Maugham (1948), in his book An introduction to the English Novel systematically analyzes that:
Heathcliff’s resistance is a special kind of resistance. It is the physical and mental working class resistance belittled by the conditions and social relations of the same society (the society of the Victorian era). Heathcliff was indeed no longer a exploited person, however, the values of humanity in his early resistance and in his love for Catherine disappeared because he adopted the standards of the ruling class( a ruthless methods even the ruling class are afraid of ). The all included in the relation between Catherine and Heathcliff, between the needs of human being and hope, can only be realized through active resistance to oppression.
