The Struggle for Voice
-A Comparative Study on the Heroines in Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea
Abstract
As English novelist Charlotte Bronte's famous novel and the representative work of British feminist, Jane Eyre was endowed with strong cognitive theory and brought a strong sense of self to English novels. However, with the deepening of the feminist interpretation, the mad woman imprisoned in the attic, Bertha mason, inspires many discussions. British novelist Jean Rhys borrowed Charlotte’s characters and story background, and wrote Wide Sargasso Sea. She used her feminist stance to illustrate the marriage story of Rochester and Bertha, and revealed the patriarchal persecution against women. The paper will compare the resistance of two heroines in the novels, and analyze the struggle for voice. After the detailed comparative analysis, it can be concluded that the power of voice is an important part of feminism. Only to gain the power of voice can female achieve other equalities for any class women.
