An Analysis on Worldwide Expansion and Cultural Infiltration of English as a Second Language

摘要

一系列的历史和现实因素促使英语在全球范围内持续扩张，英语作为国际通用语的地位也得到了确立和巩固，并被许多国家作为第一外语或第二语言进行学习和使用。英语在不断扩张的过程中，既为国际交流提供了便利，带来经济发展，政治合作及文化繁荣，但另一方面，英语这一语言是作为文化的载体，把西方的文化和价值观也带到了世界各国。外语的学习也不同程度体现出语言和文化的渗透。有人说，英语的全球扩张是文化帝国主义的突出表现。本文以英语的全球化扩张为背景，研究其扩张的原因，并结合语言文化帝国主义及萨皮尔沃尔夫假说等理论，以二语国家为例深入研究其影响，并提出应对该如何正确面对外来语及外来文化带来的冲击的相应对策建议。

Abstract

A series of historical and realistic factors have contributed to the continued expansion of English over the world. The status of English as a lingua franca has been established and consolidated. And English is by many countries as a first foreign or second language learning and use. English in the process of expanding, not only provides a convenient international exchanges, bring economic development, cultural prosperity and political consociation, but on the other hand, language is the carrier of culture. Culture and values of the Western world has brought to other countries. Learning a foreign language also reflects the different levels of language and cultural infiltration. It is said that the global expansion of English is a prominent manifestation of cultural imperialism. This thesis studies the reasons and effects of the globalization of English by combing the theory of Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. And this thesis will focus on the second language countries and put forward how to deal with the impacts of the expansion of foreign languages and foreign cultures at the purpose of getting better development.
