Study on the Subtitle Translation of Desperate Housewives Season 8 from the Perspective of Relevance Theory

摘要

从认知科学的角度，本文将以《绝望主妇》第八季为研究载体，以Sperber和Wilson的关联理论作为理论依据，进行字幕翻译研究，通过字幕的帮助来欣赏电视剧，了解不同的生活、文化、民俗、思想和价值观。字幕翻译有其自身的特点。最佳关联原则是讲话人得以制造语境效果的认知基础，这一原则运用到字幕翻译中，就意味着电影字幕应帮助观众付出最小的努力获得观赏影片最佳的语境效果。

本文将分为四个部分来进行论述。第一章是简介，主要介绍本文的研究背景，研究目的与重要性。第二章是文献综述，主要陈述一些基本的概念以及前人的研究。第三章是文章的主体部分，将结合《绝望主妇》第八季的字幕,从直译、意译进行翻译策略的研究。最后一章是结论，包含对于本研究的主要发现，不足之处和对今后研究的建议。

Abstract

From the perspective of cognitive science, the thesis will take Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory as a theoretical basis to study the subtitle translation. From the dynamic communicative context, take Desperate Housewives (Season 8) as the research carrier, to research on subtitle translation. Through the help of subtitles, we can enjoy the drama, understand different life and culture, folk, ideas and values. Subtitle translation has its own characteristics. The optimal relevance principle is the cognitive basis for the speaker to produce the contextual effect. Once this principle is applied to the subtitle translation, it means that the film subtitles should help the audience to pay the minimum effort to get the best contextual effect of the film.

This thesis will be divided into four parts. The first chapter is the introduction, mainly covering the research background, the purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter is literature review, which mainly states some basic concepts and previous studies. The third chapter is the main part of the article, in which the subtitle translation strategies will be combined with Desperate Housewives (Season 8), using literal translation and free translation which contains amplification, omission form of translation methods. The last chapter is the conclusion, including the major findings of this study, limitations and suggestions for further study.
