On the Translation of Culture-loaded Words in the English Version of Red Sorghum

摘要

经济全球化使世界联系日益紧密，国际交流日益频繁，各国在文化上也相互交流借鉴。文化负载词作为语言的精华，承载着一个国家所特有的文化，因此对文化负载词的准确翻译能为读者了解异域文化提供有效的途径。然而由于巨大的中西方文化差异，使得文化负载词的翻译成为难题。因而针对采取适当的翻译策略来完成文化负载的翻译研究是一个值得深究的话题。

莫言先生的小说中充满了文化负载词，这些文化负载词也是翻译过程中一个重要障碍。本文从葛浩文翻译的《红高粱》入手，通过文化负载词翻译的具体实例，从归化与异化两种翻译策略入手，研究文化负载词的翻译方法。

Abstract

With the globalization of economy, the world is increasingly becoming closer and there are more and more international communications, more cultural exchanges among nations. Culture-loaded words, as the essence of language, are the carriers of culture which are peculiar to a country . At the same time, the accurate translation of culture-loaded words can provide readers with an effective way to learn about the exotic culture. However, because of the great difference in Chinese and Western culture, the translation of culture-loaded words is a challenge for translators. Therefore, it’s worthwhile to make research on adopting appropriate ways to translate culture-loaded words.

MoYan’s novels are teemed with culture-loaded words that are a barrier in the course of translation. This paper analyzes the translational methods of culture-loaded words in the English version of Red Sorghum, translated by Ge Haowen. It deals with the analysis from the view of domestication and foreignization with concrete  translation examples of culture-loaded words.
