Nominalization Application in English Business Contracts and Their Translation

摘要

自加入世界贸易组织之后，中国与世界各国的国际经贸活动日益频繁。在国际贸易往来中，商务合同作为开展业务和维护权益的重要法律保障发挥着重要的作用。因此，对于商务合同语言的研究一直以来都引起各界学者的广泛关注。合同语言作为具有法律效力的特殊语言，在语篇结构、词汇和语法方面有鲜明的特征。名词化，作为语法隐喻的重要方式，因其具有使文体客观、简约和庄重的特点而被广泛应用于商务合同中。因此，对于名词化在商务英语合同中的应用及其翻译的研究是很有意义的。本文以系统功能语言学对名词化的研究为背景，探讨了英语商务合同中的名词化应用及其翻译。本文首先介绍什么是合同和名词化，其次讨论名词化的分类和作用，最后通过分析大量实例论述商务英语合同中名词化的翻译技巧。尽管本文无法详尽分析英语商务合同中的名词化现象，但希望它可以帮助加强英语商务合同相关研究者对名词化的理解，提高英语商务合同的翻译质量。

Abstract

With China’s joining in the WTO, the international business affairs between China and other countries are more and more frequent. Business contract, as an important legal guarantee of conducting business activities to protect the rights and interests of each party, has played a significant role. Hence, linguistic research of business contracts has aroused great attention of scholars. Contract language, as a special language with legal effect, has a distinctive feature in discourse structure, vocabulary and grammar. Nominalization, the most powerful resource of grammatical metaphor, is widely used in business contracts because it has the function to make discourse objective, concise, and formal. So it is meaningful to make a research of nominalization application and translation.of business English contracts. On the basis of systematic functional linguists’ study on nominalization, this thesis conducts a study of nominalization in English business contracts and their translation. Firstly, the thesis expounds the definition of contract and nominalization. Then, it discusses the classification and function of nominalization. Finally, the thesis explores the translation techniques of nominalization by analyzing large numbers of examples. Although this thesis cannot fully discuss nominalization in English business contracts, it’s hoped that it will help related researchers deeply understand nominalization, and boost the quality of translation.
