An Analysis of Translator’s Subjectivity in the C-E Translation of Folding Beijing

摘要

译者主体性在翻译过程中发挥着重要作用，近年来，众多学者就译者主体性这一话题对各种文学翻译进行了研究。科幻小说是一种特殊类型的文学作品，其翻译同样需要译者主体性的发挥。但是由于中文科幻小说水平良莠不齐，过去鲜少有人研究科幻小说的汉英翻译问题。近十多年来，中国科幻小说异军突起，引起了西方主流科幻界的注意，其中，《北京折叠》获得2016年雨果奖，这与译者翻译中的主体性不无关系。为探索译者主体性在科幻小说中英翻译中的作用，本文试图从多个维度分析了译者在《北京折叠》这一科幻小说的英文翻译过程中的主体性的体现。

本文首先介绍了译者主体性的概念、特点以及表现方式，阐述了影响译者主体性发挥的三个要素，然后对译者刘宇昆在《北京折叠》的英译过程中的用词和句式选择以及其翻译风格进行论述，接着论述了译者主体性在科幻小说中翻英方面对文化传播的影响，揭示了译者作为翻译过程中最活跃，最富创造性的因素，其主体性的发挥是译本成功，达到文化交流目的的关键因素之一。

Abstract

The translator's subjectivity plays an important role in the translation process, and in recent years, many scholars have studied various literary translations in the topic of translator subjectivity. Science fiction, a special type of literature, its translation is also linked closely with the translator's subjectivity. But due to the underdevelopment of Chinese science fiction, there are few researches in translator's subjectivity in past time, which manifests in C-E translation of science fiction. In recent ten years, the rapid development of China's science fiction has attracted the attention of western mainstream science community. The typical example is Folding Beijing, which won the 2016 prize Hugo, revealing that the achievement has close connection with the expression of translator's subjectivity. To explore the function of translator's subjectivity in science fiction translation, this paper takes the English translation of Folding Beijing for example to specifically analyze the impact of translator’s subjectivity. This paper attempts to analyze the manifestation of translator’s subjectivity from multiple dimensions in translating the science fiction---Folding Beijing.

This article firstly introduces the concept, characteristics and forms of translators' subjectivity to expound how the three elements influence translator's subjectivity, and then discusses the translator Ken Liu’s selection of words, sentence patterns and his translation style, as well as the translator's subjectivity’s function in cultural exchange and outward cultural transmission. To reveal that the translator is the most active and creative factor in the process of translation and his subjectivity is one of the key factors to make his translation a big success and to achieve the goal of cultural communication.
