摘要

委婉语是一种修辞手段，它使用不冒犯或不使人高兴的词语来代替直白、刺激性的词语，也就是说，用好的词语来掩盖事实。长久以来，任何国家都避免使用“死亡”这个词。克雷洛夫曾经说过:“虽然生活充满痛苦，但死亡更令人烦恼。”死亡不仅是痛苦的来源，也是恐惧的来源。然而，死亡无疑是所有生命的终极归宿，生物本能地回避这不可改变的命运。回避死亡命运的倾向使人们产生了一种忌讳死亡的心理，进而在语言方面表现为“死亡”委婉语的大量出现。因此，汉语和英语中都有很多对死亡的委婉语。由于东西方文化的不同，死亡委婉语的使用也有很多差异。如果我们在跨文化交际时不了解中西死亡委婉语的差异，可能会使交际无法进行，甚至造成误解。本文主要通过对比的方式分析中西方死亡委婉语的相似性和差异性，并从不同的跨文化因素，尝试阐释产生这些差异的原因，帮助促进跨文化交际的顺利开展。
