On Translating Metaphors in Fortress Besieged

Abstract
It is important to translate metaphors precisely from the perspective of cultural communication, since metaphor can be seen everywhere in Fortress Besieged, which contains rich cultural connotations. Based on the theory of functional equivalence, this paper focuses on the analysis of the text. According to the different methods of translation, the metaphors in Fortress Besieged can be divided into two categories: literal translation and free translation. The translation part is divided into three sub categories: 1 metaphor to simile, 2 add notes, 3change of metaphors. Finally, combining with the examples to find out the most widely used metaphor translation in Fortress besieged, and analyzes which translation is more accurate to convey the author's intention. The final conclusion is that the translation method used in the English version of Fortress Besieged is literal translation, which leads to the lack of accurate translation of some metaphors and the corresponding changes in the novel style. Therefore, in the premise of functional equivalence, some suggestions are put forward, which can be used for reference in future research.
