A Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and English Courtesy Languages in Intercultural Communication

摘要

在跨文化交际中，由于来自不同文化背景的人们拥有的礼貌表达方式是有一定差别的，从而致使其在交流过程当中对对方的礼貌用语产生一些误解。中西方往往因各自思维方式，社会习惯和价值观念等方面的差异，使得英汉语言表达上有很大的不同。因此本文首先将以Leech和顾曰国这两个代表人物提出的不同礼貌原则为导向，进行分析两者的区别，再进一步对跨文化交际中的中英式称谓语、问候语、恭维语、致谢语及告别语的表达方式上进行对比分析，然后在对产生以上多方面差异现象的原因进行细述，分别从价值观念、风俗习惯和思维方式以及伦理道德等方面进行解析,最后明确提出由跨文化交际中礼貌用语差异引起的文化冲突的解决方案。以对比的方式分析中英礼貌用语，能够减少文化误解和冲突，更好地促进跨文化交流的发展。

Abstract

In intercultural communication, people from different cultural backgrounds have some methods of expressing politeness with different features, which leads to misunderstanding of the other party’s polite expressions in the process of communication. For the differences between Chinese and Western countries in terms of mindset, social custom and value concept, there is a great divergence between Chinese and English. Therefore, this paper is to start to take the different politeness principles put forward by Leech and Gu Yueguo as the guide to analyze the differences between the both, and then further to make a comparative analysis of the expression of Chinese and English address forms, greetings, compliments, thanks and farewells during cross-national communication. After that, it explains the leading reasons for the above differences phenomenon in detail, separately from the values, customs and modes of thinking, ethics and some other aspects. The final step is to clearly put forward the solutions to the cultural conflicts caused by differences of polite expressions in cross cultural communication. Analyzing the Chinese and English courtesy languages in this way can cut down the cultural misunderstanding and conflict, and better facilitate the development of intercultural communication.
