A Study of Subtitle Translation of TV Shows from the Perspective of Communicative Translation Theory —Exemplified by The Vampire Diaries

摘要

在文化全球化的大趋势下，大批美剧挤进中国文化市场，使得英文字幕翻译领域的发展越来越繁荣。影视字幕的翻译作为国际间的跨文化交流以及了解异域文化的重要途径，恰当地理解跨文化语言背景并灵活准确地地切换影视字幕语言变得至关重要。影视字幕翻译既要传达原剧作家的意图，又要激起观众的欣赏兴趣。彼得·纽马克，影视字幕翻译领域的一位专家，他的交际翻译理论对影视字幕翻译有重大影响。在这一理论指导下的译文，将会更加简洁明了，通俗易懂，清晰明确，从而更满足译入语观众的欣赏要求。因此，本文从彼得·纽马克的交际翻译理论在影视字幕翻译中的运用着手，逐步介绍影视字幕翻译的特点、原则和策略，引用热播美剧《吸血鬼日记》中的经典对话，以便对交际翻译理论在影视字幕翻译中的运用规律有一个更为完善的认识。

Abstract

In the big trend of today’s cultural globalization, a mass of American TV shows have been crowding into China’s cultural market, which increasingly prosper the development of English subtitle translation. Serving as a crucial channel of international cultural communication and an important way to understand exotic culture, subtitle translation should not only convey the original meanings of the playwrights, but also intrigue the interest of the audience. Therefore, subtitle translation of TV shows and films should be given great attention that correctly comprehend intercultural language background and flexibly switching subtitle translation languages is of vital importance. Peter·Newmark ’s communicative translation theory has a great influence on subtitle translation. Under the guidance of his Communicative Translation Theory, subtitle translation should be concise, simple and clear, so as to better satisfy the aesthetic needs of target language users. In this paper, therefore, based on Newmark’s communicative translation theory concerning subtitle translation, this thesis conducts a case study of the American TV series The Vampire Diaries by systematically formulating the characteristics, principles and strategies of subtitle translation, combining with the classic conversations in the TV show, so as to have a better comprehension of practical rules of Communicative Translation Theory.
