An Analysis of Domestication and Foreignization in Translation of Proper Nouns in Harry Potter

摘要

《哈利·波特》是英国畅销作家J·K·罗琳所创作的七部魔幻系列小说，风靡全球。由于是魔幻小说，文中出现了大量虚构的专有名词，对于译者来说是一个极大的挑战,而由马爱新和马爱农合译的内地版本受到了高度的认可。

因此本课题选取原文中的人名，咒语以及魔法工具和生物等几类具有代表性的实例，通过与译文版本的对比，系统地研究归化与异化的翻译策略在专有名词中的运用。研究最后表明，类似咒语等大量出现并急需理解的专有名词，译者大多选择归化来帮助读者理解。但是像人名等需要保留异文化色彩的专有名词，译者很难兼顾两者，大多会选择异化。总的来说，归化和异化翻译策略的选取使用是译者无法规避的问题，两者之间存在排斥性，但是也能共存，互相兼容，它们在翻译的过程中可以相互补充，产生更好的效果。

Abstract

Harry Potter is a series of magic novels wirtten by J. K. Rowling, all of which have been sweeping the world. It enjoys great popularity among all kinds of languages and ages around the globe. Because of the type of this story, there occur a great deal of proper nouns. It can be a big challenge for the translators but the version translated by Ma Aixin and Ma Ainong is highly recognized by Chinese readers.

Accordingly, this paper first selects several typical examples, such as names, spells and magic tools and creatures. Then through comparative analyses with the translation, systemically study domestication and foreignization in translation of proper nouns in the original. At length, it shows that it is necessary for translators to both convey the information of the original better while considering feelings of readers when translating. Some words, like most of spells, focus on understanding so translators often choose domestication. But for names which need reserving original features and are hard to give consideration to both two translation strategies, foreignization is the first choice. No matter what strategies we choose, the final purpose is to better spread splendid works and diverse culture.
