摘要 

海洋文学是新兴的研究领域，目前国内外对海洋文学的研究较为关注，取得了些许成就，但研究视角较为狭窄，大多数学者都是从生态学、社会学、人类学和文学史等角度对海洋文学进行研究。鉴于美国海洋文学在欧美海洋文学中占据重要地位，且《老人与海》又是美国海洋文学的代表作。因此，本文将以《老人与海》，这部优秀的美国海洋文学作品为例来分析美国海洋文学中蕴含的美国精神，开辟新的海洋文学研究视角。

通过研究发现，美国精神包括实用主义，自由民主，乐观自信，永不放弃，攫取意识和冒险精神等。毫无疑问，美国精神必然与海洋文学有着些许关系。作为美国海洋文学的代表作之一，在《老人与海》中，海洋是客观环境，它象征着当时的美国社会。该小说又通过描述圣地亚哥与大马林鱼持续两天两夜的搏斗，以及他与鲨鱼的殊死搏斗，以此来展现圣地亚哥身上所具备的美国精神，即乐观向上，意志顽强和冒险精神。圣地亚哥，作为《老人与海》中的主人公和“硬汉形象”最突出的代表，他不灭的信心，坚定的意志，乐观和拼搏的精神都完美诠释了美国精神中的精髓。
