On the E-C Translation of Feminist Work from the Perspective of Manipulation Theory: Comparing Two Chinese Translations of The Color Purple_英语论文

摘要

《紫色》探讨了二十世纪末美国社会的一些重大问题，是美国黑人文学和妇女文学的一部代表作。黑人文学不同于其他类型文学，它常利用黑人英语著书，内容上表达反对民族压迫和反性别歧视等的思想。由于黑人英语的特殊性，以及原文作者与目的语读者在文化和意识形态上的不同，“忠实”的翻译原则必定会导致译文与原著意义传达上的差异。同一时期，译界出现了文化转向，翻译研究从语言研究范畴转向了文化维度。勒菲弗尔的操纵理论指出意识形态、诗学及赞助人等因素影响译者的翻译行为。作为文化身份研究的重要内容，翻译的性别视角日益受到重视，因为男女译者不同的性别意识影响译者的翻译行为。本文从操纵理论角度出发，对比研究小说《紫色》的两个汉译本，探讨译者在意识形态、性别意识和诗学方面的操纵在翻译中产生的效果。

Abstract

The Color Purple, probing into some major issues that arose in the USA in the late 20th Century, is a representative work of black literature and women’s literature. Different from other genres of literature, in black literature, African American English is adopted to reveal thoughts against racial oppression and gender discrimination. Because of the particularities of African American English and the differences on ideology between the author and its target language readers, sticking to the Chinese traditional translation principle of fidelity will definitely lead to inequivalences between the original text and the translated work. At the same period of time, the cultural transition in translation study occurred. It shifted the emphasis away from a more linguistic form of translation towards the idea that translation takes a seminal position in culture development. According to the manipulation theory by André Lefevere, ideology, poetics and patronage affect translators. And as a pivotal part of cultural identity, the perspective of translator’s gender is gaining increasing importance in translation study, because gender awareness influences translators’ behaviors. This thesis compares two Chinese versions of The Color Purple and discusses the effects generated from the translator’s manipulation in ideology, gender awareness and poetics in a translated work.
