摘要 

回目是中国古典小说特有的形式，其中包含着重要的文化信息。《红楼梦》是中国古典小说的巅峰之作，其回目以八言短句为特点，在饱有叙事功能的同时还兼具诗性特征，因此成为了章回小说的典范。在进行《红楼梦》的翻译工作时，回目翻译的重要性也一样不容小觑，但是因为中西方语言习惯和文化背景的差异，想要完全对等地翻译《红楼梦》的回目是一项十分艰巨的任务。

自1830至今，出现过三部完整而又各具特色的《红楼梦》英译本，本文选取两个具有代表性的译本进行讨论，一个是霍克思的The Story of the Stone，另一个杨宪益翻译的A Dream of Red Mansions。这两部英译本的大受欢迎可以为我们的翻译学习提供可借鉴的宝贵意见。本文主要从句式、炼字、修辞以及文化现象四个方面进行对比分析，讨论杨宪益与霍克思两位翻译家的《红楼梦》回目翻译的特色，深入研究两位译者的翻译风格与翻译策略。
